| Woodwind Yachts Restoration Project |
OWNER: David Rein, Michigan, U.S.A. PROJECT: Remove and replace approx. 50 ribs, 11 planks, lower inner stem, outer stem and keel, transom, upper transom knees, splashrails, gunwales, coamings, 1 interior seat, aft deck beam and floorboards. Remove, repair and re-install upper inner stem, inner keel, lower transom knee and decks. Completely refinish vessel inside and out with 5 coats of premium varnish. And so the project continues .......... |

This view
shows that the complete inner and outer stem has been carefully removed
for renewal and repairing as required.
|

The new
lower inner stem has been made and fastened to the repaired original
upper inner stem. The forward rib "pockets" have been cut
into the lower stem.
|

Some new
planks have been built, varnished and installed with thick varnish
for caulking. They are not yet trimmed at the transom.
|

The last
2 deteriorated planks (forward garboards) have been removed. The complete
inner stem has now been permanently installed. All wood is sealed
prior to installation.
|

The forward
garboard "blanks" are milled to thickness, steam-bent and
temporarily clamped onto the vessel. They will then be cut to shape
and permanently installed. The twist in these planks is so severe
that they must be done in this manner to avoid breaking.

The vessel's
exterior has now been faired, sanded and varnished. Here she is sanded
and ready for her 4th coat.

What
a beauty, well worth the restoration time! Follow
