Antique

Restoration, Repair, Refinishing, Building and Sales

And so the project begins .......... |
![]() |
Along with
the normal deterioration found in a neglected 50 year old vessel of
this type, she has also suffered a nasty accident, breaking 35 ribs
in a row and 6 planks along the starboard bottom. The aft starboard
seat is missing.
|
![]() |
First the
transom, upper transom knees and aft 3 ribs were removed from the
vessel.
|
![]() |
The new
transom was built, varnished and installed. The aft planking was stripped,
sanded and varnished prior to rib and transom installation.
|
![]() |
The vessel
was shored up so as not to lose the original shape. Approx. half of
the broken ribs have been removed. The hull interior is being stripped
and sanded, and will be varnished in these areas prior to installation
of the new ribs.
|
![]() |
Both the
inner and outer keels have been removed for proper access. A temporary
outer keel along with a series of straps are used to hold the vessel
together during these delicate procedures. The new ribs are made and
steam-bent into the refinished areas of the hull interior. The backs
of the ribs are sealed prior to installation.
|
![]() |
The same
procedure is followed for the next group of ribs. Often the boats
are turned and secured on their sides (as shown) to make working easier.
|
![]() |
Now all
of the ribs have been replaced. Sometimes the boats look rather "odd"
with untrimmed ribs sticking out beyond the hull.
|
![]() |
The ribs
are then sanded and varnished to catch up to the hull varnish. The
interior has now been completely sanded and varnished up to the 2nd
last coat.

to see the final result?
