Woodwind Yachts Restoration Project
TYPE: 20' Hunter Double-cockpit Runabout

BUILT: Hunter Boats, Orillia, Ontario, 1945

PROJECT: Remove and replace both full-length engine stringers, 10 planks, 12 ribs, several deck beams, covering boards, dashboard, splash rails, floor boards and seats. Perform numerous misc. repairs throughout, including refastening of the entire vessel. Completely strip, stain, revarnish entire craft and re-caulk all deck seams. Rebuild and reinstall original Chrysler engine, rewire vessel, have new upholstery made and have the original hardware repaired and re-chromed.

Vessel has been turned upside down and several of the deteriorated bottom planks have been removed.

The new bottom planks have now been sealed and installed. The bottom has been refastened and underwater putty applied overtop of the countersunk fasteners. The topside varnish is now being removed.

The vessel's bottom has been sanded, then 1 coat of wood sealer, 2 coats of underwater primer and 2 coats of bronze antifouling paint has been applied. The hull topsides are now final sanded, and ready to stain and varnish (upside down).

At the completion of all hull work (engine stringers, ribs, planks, refastening, bottom painting and hull topsides varnished to second last coat). "Elmarada" is carefully turned rightside up and we are beginning to remove and replace the covering boards.

The decks have now been stained, varnished and re-caulked. The bilge has been degreased, sanded, sealed and nicely painted. The hull interior has been stained and varnished to match. We are now ready to install the newly rebuilt original 6 cylinder Chrysler engine.

Nearing completion: The final few days of assembly. Floorboards, seats, upholstery and re-chromed hardware are now installed. The registration numbers (forward) and the name on the transom have been meticulously hand painted in two colours to match.

This view shows the straight and flawless seams on the forward deck. The hardware is deeply reflected in 9 coats of Epifanes varnish.

"Elmarada" is now loaded on a trailer and awaits her first launch in almost 20 years! The following day - launching and sea trials were a success, and her new owners were delighted.
